Interview with Marc Live: 23/4/09
Ultrakeith: Marc Live, Thanks for talking to us, how's things?
Marc: Alright, just trying to shed some light on this Project X thing.
Ultrakeith: Yeah what's up with that?
Marc: Basically Project X is an idea that me and Kool Keith came up with, when we were in Atlanta,
with Tim Dog. I brought the whole Rap Legends and the EMI deal down to Atlanta. Tim didn't have any
distribution or any record deal, he basically was selling his albums online, this is his own thing not project X.
I came down to Atlanta with a distribution deal with EMI.
Ultrakeith: Tim's taken over Rap Legacy Records or something like that? the new label he started.
Marc: my label is Rap Legends which he claims to be his, it was my concept, his label is Rap Legacy.
Ultrakeith: So what caused the fallout with project X ?
Marc: What happened was that, we start out as friends, we're all friends,so you're doing a record, and you think ok
we're friends this is great we're doing a record, but Tim looked at this as an oppurtunity to restart his career.
He had no movement with his career.
So we did the record, and Tim's looked at this as a way to basically jumpstart his career, and he totally
in my opinion went a little psychotic. He turned himself into some type of Boss, and he wanted to control every
aspect of the album, the concept, so you know, me and Keith have done many albums together through the same process,
it was I produce the record, with the exception of 3 records I produced the majority of Project X. 10 songs out of 13.
Me and Keith came up with the concept originally we wanted to be like rap superheroes,Tim wanted some more regular
young jeezy type stuff.
Ultrakeith: So you did a lot of the beat production on Project X ?
Marc: all of it ,not a lot, everything. Don't get it twisted, I did it all. As always I do it all.
All that shit you guys hear, it's me! Come on! you guys kill we with that bullshit! All that hype funky shit that
you guys hear, from Black Elvis on , I do it!
Ultrakeith: It's cool we know that, that's why we're asking about the production on Project X.
Marc: I did project X , I did that, I didn't get paid.
Ultrakeith: Well what's up with that, surely you should ?
Marc: let me break it down to you guys real simple, ok. Keith came down to Atlanta to hang out, just to basically hang out,
have fun you know, hang out in Atlanta, clear his mind. I was only down there with Tim we had business,
and at the same time we were doing the record label. Me and Keith opened some eyeballs to this new album Project X.
Tim said "I don't want to do an album with Keith, Keith is weird, he's crazy, and if I do an album, I want it to be
like a Kanye West album, a straight up album that has the potential to cross over. Keith's like I wanna do a superhero album
with girls dancing around with thongs and masks on, I said Keith I liked that, Tim's like "nah, I'll finance the shit but
it's gotta be done kinda my way"
So Tim put up the money basically to do the album, which, he bought the studio equipment, it cost $300 to master,
I produced the whole record, so he didn't have to pay for production, and he gave Keith $2,500 to rap, and he paid for the video
which cost like $5,000.So Tim spent around $10,000 on the album, which is nothing, but I had the distribution deal,
so I knew, even if we sold 5,000 copies,Tim get's paid back, we make money and we tour on it, that was the plan.
But then, when the record started to be made,Tim started to personally attack me.
He started saying "oooh, I need to get production credit on this album"even though his fat ass was eating burgers and fries all day,
and would just come in and rap when the beats were done,he wanted to take credit because he said if you produce this in his studio
he gets credit for production, which is totally insane, and he's supposed to be my friend? That is the beginning of the bullshit.
Ultrakeith: So what happens from here ?
Marc: What happens from here is I'm going to sue him, and Keith is going to sue him, and we're going to stop the album,
he has to do the honorable thing and pay people. Pay me, call me up say "Marc, look, I did some stuff n shit, I put the album out"
Give me $5,000 or $10,000, whatever you got, give Keith $10,000, you make money, you hustle, you got shit you do, give me 5 give Keith 10
and sell the record!
Ultrakeith: yeah it seems like a lot of time was invested into this project, the whole world tour, the mixtapes, the t-shirts.
Marc: He went into motion, but look, Tim's got a vendetta, and if you've got a vendetta, don't fuck with people. Like if you've got a vendetta,
don't talk to people, don't fly Keith down to Atlanta and take him to the strip club, don't fuck with me if you've got a vendetta against Raw Breed.
Ultrakeith: So you and Keith have a vendetta against Tim?
Marc: We don't have a vendetta, we have a business discrepancy, there's no vendetta. I don't think about Tim Dog, when I shit, when I'm with a bitch,
I don't think about Tim, Tim thinks about me. I don't think about Tim, i don't give a fuck about Tim I do fly shit all day
I don't care about what Tim's doing, he cares about what I'm doing. He sold more records than me but he still thinks about me in his sleep.
Ultrakeith: Some people have said from what they've heard of project x you kill Tim on the verses
Marc: I think you guys should put that up in your opinions.
Ultrakeith: Yeah some people have already posted saying you and Keith come with some tight verses but Tim's recycling some raps etc.
Marc: Look, when you dust off an old chevy, just because you dust it off and clean it up don't mean the shit's going to run like a mercedes,
it's still just a fucked up chevy. Tim is that fucked up chevy that still putts and stops and stalls, but in his mind because he got a paint job,
he thinks he's a new guy.I didn't say anything,I let him do what he wanted to do and be creative I was happy to do a record with the guy,
I was happy that we as friends, like, you know there's only so many strip clubs you can go to, I was happy we were able to come together
and make a good record, and at the same time we got a lot of shows behind it, people wanted to book it people wanted to do things,
but, Tim believed that people wanted to see him, he believed that it was all because of him, instead of him just being a friend and saying
"look guys, you know i spent like $10,000 on the album, im pressing up these t-shirts, you know, let's just make sure I get paid back and let's roll"
I would be like "Ok Tim, no problem"
Ultrakeith: We saw you guys in Melbourne, i think it was the first show project x did, it was a great show.
Marc: It was a great show, it could have been a great thing, when we got to Australia and we did the United States run. Tim wanted to control grown men,
and when you're a grown man and you've done everything you've done already, that's when you're like "Tim, we don't want to ride in the car with you,
you ride in your own car we'll meet you at the venue" we don't want to do all these things.
Ultrakeith: So what else have you been doing lately? been touring with Keith ?
Marc: I did one show with Keith in Canada, that's pretty much it.
Ultrakeith: Have you been in the studio?
Marc: nah I'm working on my label, Rap Legends Recordings with EMI.
Ultrakeith: Are you still releasing episode 3? what's happening with the Marc Rippen stuff ?
Marc: I'm doing new stuff, I'm going to do a double album episode 1 and episode 3.
Ultrakeith: What about the Kannadi stuff with Radaar Van ?
Marc: Yeah me and Radaar Van we're going out to Paris in July and we're going to record episode 1 and we're going to record a new Kanaadi Spadez
because the old Kanaadi Spadez got caught up in a little bit of politics.
Ultrakeith: Is it (the old one) going to be released ?
Marc: Nah , we recorded it in Melbourne with my good friends Roger and them, and then they were supposed to put it out,
but then Roger went a different direction, it got remixed, I do love those guys I want to get in touch with them.
Ultrakeith: Any exclusive stuff with Keith you've been doing lately?
Marc: I would like to do another KHM album.
Ultrakeith: KHM 3 with you Keith and Jacky?
Marc: Yeah I'd like to do a new album with jacky, we had a lot of fun doing those records and stuff, I think the beauty of that was we were all
on the same keel, it wasn't like anybody tried to take the helm or feel like they're more important than anybody else on the project,
so yeah i'd like to do another clayborne and then a KHM, it's just difficult now because everyone used to live in the same area in California,
I lived down the street from Keith like 5 minute walk, H lived down the street from me, so we all just went to Keith's house all day,
got high, you know, smoke drank did beats then went to the studio that night. So we'd wake up, we'd get high, we'd do the beats,
then we'd go book studio time, or I'd call Ice's house, I'd say Ice I want to come up to the studio Ice would say call Junior,
I'd go up, call the engineer up, and we'd record, even though it was unorthodox it was a great system to get shit done, now, H lives in LA,
Keith's always constantly touring you never know where he is, I'm in New York , so it's difficult, but like I said, I might be in New York,
next month I might be in Chicago, I move around a lot , go where the money is, so for us to really sit down and put together a project
we have to have the time and the ability to do it, we have to block out 2 weeks of our time to do a record, so that's what we try to figure out,
how to do that.
Ultrakeith: lately we heard a new track with Keith and Ced together.
Marc: Yeah they did a video for it.
Ultrakeith: What the new Ultra track?
Marc: Yeah.
Ultrakeith: Is it true? There's some rumuors going around that there's a new ultra album coming out.
Marc: haha, I dunno, i mean it would be great if they did another Ultra record, i think Ultra needs to do a new record, i think Ultra had the same problems
project x had, I think you gotta go back to when you were hungry when there was no money, when there was no ego's and you could just go and do great records,
and then let the record create the ego, instead of going to the studio with indiscretions, it reflects on the record, you just can't do it,
so what Keith and Ced did with this new record they just had fun.
Ultrakeith: So there will be a new album?
Marc: No I didn't say that , don't misquote me on that, there is no new album Im 'just saying that, you know, it's possible.
Ultrakeith: We also heard that Ced was doing something with Bill Cosby too, did you hear about that?
Marc: hahaha, i heard he did some stuff with Bill Cosby.
Ultrakeith: Was Bill rapping on the track lol?
*laughter*
Marc: You know Ced does a lot of projects and stuff. everybody's working, everybody's doing stuff.
Ultrakeith: With Keith, his next album , we're anticipating a solo album, do you know if it will be 'King Service', it's been mentioned it will be but?
Marc: I think with Keith you never know what he's going to come with, it's always a toss up you know, Keith is always in the studio. Keith is the hardest
working guy out of everybody on UltraKeith. He is by far, he deserves to be where he's at. I have the utmost respect for Keith. I know sometimes
we've had differences in the past, sometimes we don't talk a lot , but that motherfucker, that guy really works hard. He does his shows, he dabbles,
he's a one man band, he goes into the studio.
Ultrakeith: He could do a track with Bill Cosby ?
Marc: He might have a track with Bill Cosby already, but Keith is the real deal, he's what an artist really is, that's his life, it's not a game,
it's not part time, that motherfucker is a rock star.
Ultrakeith: Yeah he does a lot of shows doesn't he?
Marc: He lives, eats, shits rap.
Ultrakeith: You think he does more shows than any other rapper?
Marc: Yeah I think Keith is up there. Let me tell you something man, touring is hard man. I don't like touring anymore and I said I would never say that shit,
but that shit is hard, like, going performing every night, waking up with a hangover, eating fucked up food, sitting in a hotel all night with a dum bitch,
it's not all like you think glamour and girls, the shit is like a lot of lonely nights in the hotel, fucked up food, you know,
some shows are packed, some shows are empty.
Ultrakeith: I'm sure you guys would get some good girls after the shows though?
Marc: Yeah not like you think man, it's not. Maybe like a few years ago, it's not like that, not like you think, it's work. Touring is work,
you gotta make the best out of it and enjoy it. See I didn't understand Keith for a long time, I didn't understand why he did some things,
but when I just went to Canada with him just now I'm like I get it now, he knows how to do this shit, he figured it out. It is all him,
he ain't got no group, if he's not on stage, he don't get paid there's no show. I ain't like he got a group he can fall back one night and be not as powerful,
he's gotta perform, he's gotta put on a show, he's gotta come out in his cape and give people what they're paid their money to see.
Ultrakeith: Cool, so anything else going on ?
Marc: Going to Paris to record the new album with Junkadelic in July, I'll be putting the new album out, probably the real Kanaadi Spadez in December,
gonna release Kanaadi Spadez and my double album on the same date, through my label, through Rap Legends, Episode 3 and Episode 1.
So that way you guys will have the 3 albums, see I'm gonna do 6 albums then I'm not recording anymore, If I do a new record it will be a whole new persona,
but under Marc Live Rockstar I'm a do 6 albums, like the star wars shit.
Ultrakeith: So what about after that, are you still going to rap ?
Marc: I'm still going to rap but I'll probably change a different persona, do a whole different character.
Ultrakeith: What do you think the new persona might be ?
Marc: It'll be some new shit, but as Marc Live 6 more albums. Raw Breed are re-releasing the Killer Instinct album too. Raw Breed is coming back out.
The original members of Raw Breed are coming back out, we're re-releasing the killer instinct album from 97, it never came out.
We're re-releasing that, we're gonna do 3 bonus cuts and then we're going to do a brand new album with the original rappers,
me, Alexander the Great and Nick Swift. Tr Love and Ariel Caban will be doing production. That should be hopefully coming out,
looking to come out with that soon. So yeah that's pretty much it you guys got the story.
